Gas on the rise

It is just sick that we as citizens of a "free" society are required to pay so much for our fuel. So I figured since we in North Texas are near the $2.50 mark I might as well ask Jeeves. Maybe he might be able to shed some light on the problem and he did find a few items but no answer to the burning question. But Jeeves did provide the link above: 6 simple ways to save money on gas. Good luck to us all the American sucker, I mean taxpayer.

Air conditioners require a significant amount of gas. Park your
car in the shade to keep it cool, and use a sun shield if you have to
park in the sun. Roll down the window, and enjoy the fresh air when
you drive.

Sorry, cupcake; that ain't an option in Houston. This place is a giant sauna from June through September. Parking in the shade just means you get more birdshit on your car. That A/C runs full-blast, on recirc, with the windows up. End of story.

The tip about tire pressure and fuel filters is a good one, though. I'm always amazed by how few people perform even the most basic maintenance on their vehicles.

Finally, don't use high octane fuel unless you have a high-compression engine. If you don't know whether or not the engine is high-compression, it probably isn't. The rule of thumb is that anything over 10.5:1 makes good use (i.e.- improved mileage) of high octane fuel. Less compression than that--meaning most passenger vehicles and all SUV's--translates into no pre-detonation problems. Hence, you're wasting your money on high octane fuel.

The only thing increased octane does is prevent pre-detonation in high compression engines. Period. Anybody tells you different is selling something--probably gas.

Thanks jaregghead, I didn't know about the pre-detonation problems. Lucky for me I drive a small car w/ a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine so I get about 33-38 mpg on the highway depending if I'm driving the speed limit.
Thanks crys, I'm sorry you're broke, play the lotto if you can scratch up some change.
